Bills stick to defense in latest CBS Sports 2020 mock draft

If the NFL Draft were tomorrow, the Buffalo Bills would have the 29th selection in the first round. While that idea is a bit mind-blowing for those who have followed Buffalo over the past two decades, it’s not unrealistic that the Bills could be selecting deeper into the first round than any time in this millennium.

Two springs ago, Buffalo originally held the No. 21 and No. 22 draft slots. However, the maneuvering of draft capital by general manager Brandon Beane pushed both selections into the top half of the draft when they selected quarterback Josh Allen and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in the first round of the 2018 draft.

The Bills chose Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver in the last edition of the NFL Draft, and CBS Sports sees Buffalo bolstering their defensive line once again in his latest mock draft. The Bills select Notre Dame defensive lineman Julian Okwara, a 6-4, 248-pound senior.

It’s an interesting pick, as Okwara is ranked 65th overall by CBS. Still, the senior is a first-round prospect, CBS highlights:

Buffalo needs more young talent on the edge. Okwara has NFL-caliber strength right now on the outside of Notre Dame’s defensive line. His length will appeal to coaches too.

Okwara registered eight sacks last year to go along with 38 total tackles, 12.5 of which went for losses.

Nevertheless, the heir apparent to Jerry Hughes will need to find his way onto the roster sooner than later. With the Bills possibly picking later than in previous years, Buffalo could take a player who does not need to make massive contributions right away, as many roster holes have been addressed over the past two offseasons.

Even so, there is a great deal that can happen between now and when the real draft order is set. However, it’s never too soon to explore who could fit into Buffalo’s future
